Floating Nightstands
New York City
A design, whether for a room, a house, and addition or just furniture can be seen as a solution to a series of challenges, whether real, wished for, or aesthetic.
For this primary bedroom, there was only one wall to locate a king size bed- and a large arched window covered virtually all of it. First step- we installed one inch thick laminated glass to virtually eliminate the street noise. Next we chose materials and colors of rugs, drapes and bedding to add to the calming atmosphere.
We then created a custom king size bed and hamper to act as a centerpiece for the room. A leather covered headboard and two nightstands, that appear to project out from behind the headboard, float in front of the daylight. Just two end panels support the nightstands. The drawers and top have a delicate alignment and deference to the person in bed. The design allows the daylight to seep above and below.
During the design thinking we thoughtfully concealed all the essential switches, wiring and power.
