Memento Loci

New York City

The Owners, having traveled the globe, gathered numerous mementos and cherished memories. They envisioned their new home as a space to showcase these meaningful artifacts from their journeys.

We gut renovated this 1,600 SF two bedroom apartment that contains one diagonal façade in the layout. Working in this trapezoidal space, we placed the predominate living areas where the most daylight occurred. We also created a home office, that also meets code as an additional third bedroom —  a plus for any future sale.

The entrance door is located deep within the footprint of the building. The ribbon of walnut panels not only cleans up and simplify the odd spaces in this landmarked 1909 building, but acts as an organizing element leading your eye in, and cleverly conceals various storage rooms, a laundry closet, and a secondary bathroom.

Oak panels and millwork delineate the kitchen area within the large open space.

The Owner's souvenirs are proudly displayed on the multitude of cantilevered shelves and counter space.

As typical, we work hard with our engineers to have the central air conditioning and other infrastructure work at the service of the design.
